Summary Response English 101 September 30,2015 End to Corporal Punishment Democratic State Senator Joe Keavany has sponsored a bill to end corporal punishment in all private and public schools in Missouri. Alex Stuckey reports, if the bill were to pass it would ban corporal punishment, or spanking, in both public and private schools in the state. However, there has been concern about including private schools in the bill. Stuckey adds, when it comes to discipline in schools, district officials believe there are better ways — ranging from parent-teacher conferences to suspension or expulsion opposed to the use of corporal punishment. In Stuckey’s next point he mentions, the way the laws are set now in Missouri, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education requires each school district’s written discipline policy to include a policy on corporal punishment which has led to inconsistency throughout the state. Stuckey’s last point, proponents of this bill believe that the use of physical response doesn’t change behavior. |
