Summary Response English 101 September 30,2015 Gender Beauty Standards Women set themselves to a higher beauty standard than men. Dave Barry believed that women generally do not think of their looks in the same way that men do. He believed that women look at themselves in a self-deprecating way. Barry had the realization that women have a higher set beauty standard than men. For example, he mentions the production of Barbie, a doll used to show women what their appearance is “supposed to be” even though a Barbie doll made to real-life scale would have unhealthy proportions. Although, boys are given action figures that are “hideous” compared to the dolls that girls receive. This could explain why from a young age girls set themselves to a higher beauty standard than boys, and why boys are more o.k. with “average”. Also, Barry mentions the multibillion-dollar cosmetic industry and he compares men to women in that men would never spend as much time or money trying to make themselves more appealing. In conclusion, Dave Barry compares the standards to which men and women compare themselves to the “traditional beauty standard”. |
